big room, nice onsen, excellent breakfast, relaxing athmosphere
The staff was very gracious and the food was delicious. The atmosphere in the rooms was very nice with great use of older furniture pieces artistically included.
Three of the staff were particularly helpful and welcoming; others not so much. The rooms are lovely, very clean, very traditional ryokan. The Japanese bath is available all night and until 10 am, which is a major plus.
The location is difficult to find and no map was provided online, nor did the station staff at the information office give us good directions. We walked many, many blocks out of our way and had to ask several times (in Japanese) to finally find the inn. I would have liked to book dinner, but couldn't do so on the website. The location is some minutes walk away from the central Bikan (museum) district most visitors will be heading toward.
Though some parts of the building are a bit worn down, the rooms are beautiful and very comfortable. The baths were pretty standard issue. The breakfast offers a true Japanese ryokan experience. As in most places in Japan, the staff spoke limited English but were incredibly kind and helpful. The neighbourhood the ryokan is situated in is not the most charming, but is only a stone's throw away from the historical centre of Kurashiki.
Traditional Great Japanese breakfast
Uncomfortable futons. No kettle in room. Staff did not speak sufficient English even though advertised that they do.
